The Thomas

Grandfather Clock

 Plans

The Clock Mechanics offers complete plans for building the internal workings of a grandfather clock!  The whole clock is made out of wood, including the gears! Best of all, you need only to cut the templates out of the plans, paste them onto wood and cut along the lines. This clock can even be made with a hand-saw!   No special tools are required!

Mr. R.D. Thomas invented this Grandfather Clock Movement over forty years ago.  Since then, nearly one million people throughout the world have enjoyed making and owning this perfect conversation piece.  It is very practical too -- it will regulate to an accuracy of approximately four seconds per week!  (A finished Thomas Grandfather Clock Movement is perpetually displayed in the British Historical Museum and also in a Canadian shopping mall!)

The Ideal Clock Project  :  A Different Kind Of Clock

The Thomas Grandfather Clock Movement is an ideal project for the woodworking enthusiast who takes pride in producing, by his or her own handicraft, something original and different.

The finished clock may be mounted in a grandfather type case or simply supported by tall legs leaving all working parts visible.

Three distinct features of this clock make it different from any other pendulum-type clock:
(1) With exception of the weight, pulleys and cord, which drive the clock, it is made entirely of wood.
(2) It is designed in kit form and may be dismantled and reassembled in seconds.
(3) It features a sweep hand which moves in one-second steps.

  Easy Construction

Building this grandfather clock is really very easy.

The gears and various clock pieces are drawn out on paper.

Simply cut out each item and glue this "paper template" to the wood.   Wait for the glue to dry and cut out the clock piece.

No specialized tools are needed, but electric powered
equipment is very helpful.

Completed Thomas Grandfather Clock

Movements & Wall Clocks

Here are some pictures of a completed, Thomas Grandfather Clock, graciously sent

to us by very pleased and talented woodworkers!

Mickey Hudspeth Writes:
Attached is a photo of the Thomas Grandfather Clock that I made about 20 years ago! Still runs great and keeps good time. The wood is walnut with about 8 coats of boiled linseed-oil and turpentine. The mechanism is now in a grandfather case about 6 feet high with lots of glass. It has won several blue ribbons and one "best of show."

Thank you very, very much for the picture of your lovely clock, Mickey!  We must tell our woodworking friends that you modified the support plates and clock face to cut out excess wood for a better view of the clock and the gears.  Otherwise, your clock is exactly as the patterns specify.  Click here to see Mickey's Gift Clock Kit we now offer!
Mickey told us that he would welcome some e-mail if anyone was curious about his clock (I might have to put him on the darn payroll!)  Here's Mickey's e-mail address: mhudspeth@bellsouth.net

Thanks again, Mickey!

Yvan Writes:
Steve, I just won the final in woodworking and carving for the Rio Grande Valley in Harlingen TX. I won a Blue ribbon with my working clock movement and cabinet. I was 2nd in the People's Choice, only 7 votes behind. I got a special mention too!

Ken Foster writes:
Just thought I'd let you know I've just about finished the Thomas Wall clock. It just needs a finish on it . It has been working just fine. Was really surprised at how easy it all came together. Love the way the clock assembles and disassembles. I'm sending a pix of the clock. It is still hanging on my test stand. It took somewhere between 50 and 60 hours to build and loved every minute of it!

Here are some pictures that were sent to us by Tony Rodgers, in New Zealand. Tony elected to make his Thomas Wall Clock so that it sits on a shelf (an option in the plans).

Tony writes, "I spent many happy hours in making up gigs and fixtures in the manufacturer of the gears and plates . . . This has been a great project and has kept me amused during the winter months! . . . The second clock I made was a doodle to make and it worked the first tic!  The timekeeping is astonishingly accurate (to within a few seconds per day!) Once again, thanks for the great project -- it is being admired by all!"

Wall Clock Plans To Make a
